Classical Pick of the Week: Kirshbaum with LACO, Shaham with BSO

Classical Pick of the Week: Kirshbaum with LACO, Shaham with BSO

Ralph Kirshbaum is kind of a big deal, and is performing with LACO this weekend. Kirschbaum currently holds the Piatigorsky Chair (previously held by Eleonore Schoenfeld and Ron Leonard) at the Thornton School of Music at USC and the late Bernard Greenhouse said that Kirshbaum is “undoubtedly one of the most respected teachers and artists in the world.” this is his first major LA appearance in recent memory and will perform Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme (performed by Moser with the LA Phil a few years ago and on schedule again for the Piatigorsky International Cello Festival in Spring 2012).

“Reflection” (the name of the program) is scheduled for Saturday December 10th at 8 PM and December 11th at 7 PM at the Alex Theatre (Glendale) and Royce Hall (Westwood), respectively. The program also includes Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin, Respighi’s the Birds, and Thomas Adès three Studies from Couperin. Tickets are $24-$105, and senior/student rush tickets and group discounts are also available. Pre-concert lectures are an hour before each performance.

It’s been 20 years since the Boston Symphony last performed in LA, and they’ll be back for one night only at the Disney Hall. Acclaimed violinist Gil Shaham will join them for a performance of Brahms’ Violin Concerto (you might recognize the last movement from the film there Will be Blood). Also on the program are Harbison’s Symphony no. 4 and the second suite from Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloe.

You can get your tickets here and don’t forget to use your credits! The Boston Symphony is also giving away a few tickets on their Facebook page, and since they are on the West Coast, your chances of winning are pretty good. Concert is this Saturday at 8 PM.
