Photo & Perspective: Eddie Vedder Brings Ukulele Songs, Cheese, and Classics to the Pearl Jam Faithful, Friday at Benaroya Hall

Laura Musselmanthis post is the first in a new series in which longtime Seattle music photographer Laura Musselman provides her thoughts on what it was like to be at, and shoot, a show.

Pearl Jam, and more specifically Eddie Vedder, were a huge part of my adolescence. I spent a good portion of my meager paychecks from TJ Maxx on bootlegs that I bought from people on newsgroups. My obsession also led me to buy the records that Eddie Vedder spun on Monkey Wrench Radio broadcasts, turning me on to Sleater-Kinney, Daniel Johnston, and Descendents to name a few; these bands led my natural progression toward indie rock in the late ’90s-early 2000s. Falling into indie rock made me into a quieter, more secretive Pearl Jam fan, especially after leaving Wisconsin–where nearly every person I’ve ever met is a fan. Nowadays I mostly listen to them while singing the vocals on Rock Band, but the music still holds a big warm spot in my heart (and I still know all the words, too).

I feel a little out of place among the fans, though. While walking through the lobby of Benaroya on Friday night, I saw a girl on her cell phone with a portrait of Eddie as her background image. a fan in the nosebleeds got upgraded to a front-row seat, and spent a good long time crying, bent forward in his seat, clutching the stage and freaking out. Tons of guys wearing the shirts they just bought at the merch table were taking pictures of the marquee with their phones. The artwork for the tour featuring a surfing Eddie with his uke seemed like an inadvertent caricature and made me laugh, but everyone else definitely ate it up.

Laura Musselmanwhen Glen Hansard opened the night with just a mandolin and his voice, covering R.E.M.’s “Hairshirt,” I nearly lost it. it was one of the most perfect covers I’ve ever heard, one of my favorite songs. I nearly forgot I was supposed to be taking photos. it was a beautiful moment, and a gorgeous set overall.

The show didn’t exactly create the world’s greatest concert photos, but I wasn’t really expecting it to. I was corralled with other photographers on either side of the stage, allowed to shoot the first three songs where Vedder very simply sat on a stool, played guitar or ukelele and sang. it was simple and dark. I would have loved to shoot the encores when people were standing, dancing, singing along to “Hard Sun,” and during duets with Hansard. it was a pleasure just to be there and I am lucky to have captured it, despite the restrictions. Even though it felt a little cheesy at times, I still loved every minute of it. I can’t wait for a Vedder/Hansard collaborative album.

Eddie Vedder – Hartford, CT June 18, 2011

Some friends and I made the 7.5 hour road trip down to Hartford on a beautiful Saturday morning for the Ed Vedder show. this would be my 7th time seeing Ed and I was just as excited to see him as any of the other times I’ve seen him. It’s always a special occasion to see your favourite singer who is also the singer in your favourite band in an intimate setting especially when the setlists are always changed up and you never know what to expect. the release of his new Ukelele Songs added another dimension to the show as well so with the new album, the amazing Into the Wild soundtrack and a huge catalogue of Pearl Jam material we knew we would be getting some interesting setlists this tour. We picked up our fanclub tickets and once we saw the location of our seats which were truly random (fanclub seats are random for the Ed tour) we hoofed it on over to a cool looking pub close by for some food and many shots.

We headed over early to catch opening act Glen Hansard as we had been hearing great things about his set since the tour started a few days before. I literally only knew that this guy was in an acclaimed band called the Frames before it was announced that he was supporting Ed. I tried to get to know some of his work before this night, but with all of the shows I’ve had lately I didn’t have the time. right off Glen won over the crowd and performed a short but solid set adding in a story on how he came to know Ed. He’s also featured on Ed’s Ukelele album so we would be seeing him again later in the show. very strong opener.Glen Hansard Set List

Ed came out to a very enthusiastic crowd who eventually settled in to listen to Ed do his beautiful thing. he came out right off with material from the new Uke album which sounded great as expected then broke out a beautiful version of Trouble. I had heard this cover before, but I never get tired of hearing it. the crowd joined in for a loud rendition of sometimes followed by just Breathe and I Am mine. everything was perfection so far, Ed’s voice just gets better and better and it’s really showcased in these types of small venues favouring acoustics. Ed then talked a bit about Clarence Clemens and for some reason his techie came out at that moment to let Ed know that Clarence had passed that night, it was a really sad moment that I didn’t catch right away because of where I was sitting, but he dedicated the next song to Clarence which was the lullaby version of Betterman. Long Nights was then played for the first time ever (he knew I was there icon wink Eddie Vedder Hartford, CT June 18, 2011 followed by three other of my fave songs from Into the Wild (it’s all perfection) then he broke out Immortality and I freaked. SOOOOO good, definitely one of the main highlights of the night for me followed closely by Unthought known and Wishlist. beautiful version of Society and Sleepness Nights with Glen and we got an extra encore (so far he had only played 1) to end a beautiful night.

If anything each Pearl Jam/Ed Ved experience is unique so it’s hard to pick a favourite, each show has it’s own personality so I’m just going to say that this Hartford show is high on my list of favourite moments.
