The One Satellite Everyone Remembers

 The One Satellite Everyone Remembers

Space travel and satellites, like many other things, were also in the realm of rivalry between the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. the Russians beat the Americans to it and launched the first satellite on October 4, 1957. It is another story that the Americans became the primary space faring nation in later years and are still up there in the first place.

The one satellite that remains etched in every one’s mind, despite many advances made in satellite technology since, is Apollo 11 flight to the Moon. the whole world literally sat glued to radio and television and when Neil Armstrong stepped on to the Moon, the feeling on the Earth was exhilarating. Who could forget hearing Armstrong’s voice proclaiming One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind? America felt especially happy. They had won the cold war. well almost the mission’s primary purpose of landing on the moon and to return safely was accomplished with resounding success. It also brought back assorted materials from the Moon. Experiments concerning seismic aspects, solar winds, lunar magnetic fields were all carried out.

The ironically named Sea of Tranquility was the first location to lose its tranquility on the Moon. the landing craft, the aptly named Eagle descended on the moon with the first human beings, or for all we know, the first life. Buzz Aldrin became the second man to put foot on the Moon. But, it was Michael Collins who orbited in the command ship but not land, so near yet so far, who got the wholesome praise later for his magnanimity, discipline and sense of duty.

The Apollo 11 was launched from Kennedy Space Center. It was a massive structure at 363 feet tall. the launch vehicle was called AS-506. the vehicle was not very significantly different from previous Apollo vehicles. the command module was 3.63 meters long. the service module was cylindrical and its length was 6.88 meters. It enabled the spacecraft with propulsion and other maneuverings. the propellants were stored here.

The higher part was for the crew to live in and also to work from. the lower part of the Lunar Module had the engine and storage bays. the crew’s return to the command module was facilitated by the lunar module.

After the successful mission, the crew departed and reaching the Earth’s atmosphere, the craft landed safely into the Pacific Ocean. the victorious crew was then taken to the USS Hornet. A mission dreamed of by whole humankind, given shape to by one man, President Kennedy representing that whole humankind and physically carried by one man Neil Armstrong, the Apollo 11 is a satellite that will always be special.

The mission begot a whole lot of stories, inspired many adventure stories and songs. on July 16, 2009, the 40th anniversary of Apollo 11 mission was commemorated all over the world. In NASA, a panel discussion named Apollo: History and Legacy was held at James Webb Auditorium.

Golfing the Eagle Falls Resort at the Fantasy Springs Casino

Golfing the Eagle Falls Resort at the Fantasy Springs Casino

This past Christmas my family and I headed off to the California desert for a little fun in the sun. my kids took their beach gear to lounge at the pool and I grabbed my golf bag looking to take in one of the hundred or so golf courses that are found in Palm Springs and the desert resort cities of Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage, La Quinta, Indian Wells and Indio.

Before I left I searched on-line for some of the top courses and found the Eagle Falls Golf Resort which is part of the Fantasy Spring Casino in Indio. Designed by renown golf architect Clive Clark, the Eagle Falls Golf Resort has carved out of the desert a beautiful golf course that is full of elevations, water features and foliage rarely seen on a golf course that is open to the public.

This 18-hole course has three sets of tees with distances ranging from 5,729 to 6,715 depending upon whether you set up at the Falcon, Hawk or Eagle t – boxes. At par 72 the course is a challenge to the high and low handicap golfer.

The signature hole is the par five 18th which has a working waterfall, hence the name Eagle Falls.
In the distance you can see the twelve story 250 room tower of Fantasy Springs Casino hotel.

All told the course has three par fives and three par threes. according to the golf shop and some of the promotional literature I read Eagle Falls was named the desert’s best value course two years in a row by Greenskeeper.org and is the site of the annual Playboy Golf scramble as well as the Frank Sinatra Celebrity golf event, benefiting the Barbara Sinatra Children’s charities.

The day that I was out the sun was shining bright, but it was a little windy making the course all the more challenging. my playing partner and I got a special rate because he was staying at the casino hotel, but for those not staying at the casino the regular rate that time of year is about $75 dollars, less if you want to try one of the twilight rates.

The pro shop was a little disappointing, nothing more than a box car out in the desert. but it was fully stocked with the latest gear. There is also a snack bar and attractive girls selling food and drink on the course. our golf cart had a GPS built into it, so I didn’t have to guess how far to the nearest hazard or green.

When we got done, we went over to the casino for a little black jack, poker and roulette.
